The only reliable way to keep your privacy from being abused is to stop it from being collected in the first place. Monocles Browser has two simple goals:
- Minimise the data sent across the Internet.
- Minimise the data stored on your device.
Most browsers quietly hand over large amounts of information—via JavaScript, cookies, DOM storage, user-agent strings and other fingerprinting techniques—allowing sites and ad networks to track you. Monocles Browser disables these privacy-sensitive features by default. If a site legitimately needs one of them you can enable it for that visit only, or create a domain-specific rule that activates the feature automatically while you are on the site and turns it off again when you leave.
At present Monocles Browser uses Android’s system WebView to render pages, so always keep WebView updated for best results (details here). Starting with the 4.x release series the browser will switch to “Monocles WebView”, a hardened fork of Android WebView that enables even stronger privacy protections.
