A versatile mind mapping tool

Freeplane for Mac is an open-source mind mapping software that can be used on Apple Mac OS platforms. It is a software redesigned by a main developer from FreeMind, written in JAVA, and therefore requires the installation of a JAVA runtime environment. Users in need of this tool can download and use it.

Software Functions

Note the use of freely positionable, unconnected nodes (like Post-it notes);

Arrange ideas (nodes) into a hierarchy connected by lines (edges);

Classify nodes using metadata (attributes) and style types (system styles, user-defined styles, level styles);

Group nodes with visual containers (clouds) and accolades (summary nodes);

Connect nodes with dynamic links, free lines (connectors), and labels;

Automatically style nodes (with bubbles, colors, edge types, etc.) based on hierarchy and content (conditional styles, automatic edge colors, level styles);

Build nodes in terms of content (text, scientific formulas, calculations, icons, images, and hyperlinks) and presentation areas (core, details, notes, attributes, images, and tooltips);

Change views, find, scroll, and navigate by hiding content (collapsing branches, filtering, summarizing details, and hiding extensions in tooltips);

Tasks with calendar and reminders;

Password protect entire maps and individual nodes using DES encryption;

Easy, object-oriented main menu, context menus, multi-language support, spell checker, properties panel, drag-and-drop functionality, hotkeys, batch execution, publishing options, sharing, and selection preferences using inline and dialog editors;

Approximate search (similarity search) can find search terms in text even without an exact match (e.g., "setup" = "setting" or "file" = "files").

Even without a perfect match (e.g., "setup" = "setting" or "flie" = "file"), approximate search (similarity search) can locate search terms within the text.

Support for LaTeX formulas below nodes;

Extensibility with attachments and home-made scripts made easy with features;

Integration with the Docear academic literature suite;

Extensive support via wiki and forums; tutorials and documentation available in mind map format.

Software Introduction

Freeplane is another tool of the same type designed by the main creator of the classic mind mapping software FreeMind. Freeplane has been officially localized into Chinese and offers a comprehensive set of features, making it no less capable than FreeMind.

In Freeplane, users can freely adjust the position of node text within a created mind map. This specifically includes: adjustment within the same main node and movement between different main nodes.
