How to Use

1. Before becoming a driver, all individuals undergo background checks (known in the U.S. as "background check"), including criminal records and driving history. Anyone with a criminal record cannot pass the driver certification and will not appear as an option in the passenger app.

2. All drivers have a star rating system. Passengers can generally see the driver’s star rating before boarding. If the rating is very low and you are traveling alone, it is recommended to cancel the current ride and select another vehicle. The company sends warning emails to drivers with consistently low ratings. After the ride, passengers can rate the driver and leave written feedback.

3. Both Uber and Lyft have a Critical Response Team (emergency response team).

4. Once a passenger feels unsafe, they can click the “Call Me” button in the app to contact the company’s emergency team. Lyft states that its critical response team operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Therefore, if you sense danger, contact the team immediately—do not take chances, as life is precious and irreplaceable. If a driver receives a passenger complaint, the ride-hailing company will assign someone to handle it specifically. Consequences range from suspending the driver for a week to revoking their driving privileges, and in serious cases, contacting law enforcement.

5. Besides contacting the company immediately, what else can passengers do to protect themselves? Mainly two things: First, stay in touch with family and friends—inform them where you’re going, and share the license plate number with them before getting in the car. Second, observe the driver. Drivers with legitimate jobs and strong family responsibilities tend to be more trustworthy. For example, some retired workers enjoy driving to see cityscapes and interact with people, or those with full-time jobs who drive part-time—not only are they unlikely to harm passengers, but they often provide a pleasant riding experience.

Differences Between Lyft and Uber

First, both ride-hailing apps require users to register an account and link a bank card before use. Booking a ride is very simple: after entering pickup and drop-off locations, the app automatically generates the cost and estimated arrival time for different ride types. Once you select your preferred option, the system arranges a nearby driver. A special reminder: when the driver arrives, always verify the license plate number to avoid impersonators posing as Uber drivers. Both Uber and Lyft offer shared rides for 1–2 people, standard 4-passenger sedans, premium 4-passenger sedans, standard 6-passenger SUVs, and premium 6-passenger SUVs.

In terms of vehicle types, Uber additionally offers walking + shared rides (Express Pool) and vehicles designed for wheelchair users or those needing assistance (Assist/WAV).

Let’s focus on the commonly used Express Pool. After setting pickup and drop-off points, the map displays a blue walking zone, usually within a 3-minute walk. After successfully booking, the map shows the walking route to the pickup point—just follow the instructions to wait at the designated spot.

The same applies when getting off: you may need to disembark a few minutes’ walk from your final destination and walk the rest. Generally, it’s recommended to use Express Pool for longer distances—it’s about 30% cheaper than regular shared rides.

The most distinctive feature of the app is that its vehicles display a bright pink Lyft sign on the front window, easily visible from afar. When your ride is approaching, the app can make your phone emit a pink light to prevent the driver from missing you.

Special reminder: first-time registrants get 10 rides with $5 off each—be sure to take advantage of this offer!
